Dr. Foodle knows that planning a dinner party can be a lot of hard work, which is why he’s always thinking of ways to make it easier for you. If you’ve booked a dinner party on your calendar and want to impress and delight your dinner guests, try throwing a themed dinner. You don’t have to organize a Murder Mystery Dinner Party or an elaborate Hawaiian Luau to impress your guests – Dr. Foodle has put together a list of simple, fresh ideas for dinner party themes below!
Lemons and limoncello (the Italian lemon-infused liqueur) are in season and on trend! Take advantage of products on the market right now and throw an Italian limoncello-themed summer soirée. Find tablecloths or napkins with a lemon pattern and create a simple centerpiece featuring vintage apothecary bottles and jars and fresh lemons. Serve water infused with lemon and basil in a glass pitcher with mason jars to complete that vintage vibe. Offer your guests Italian-themed appetizers, such as tomato bruschetta and Caprese salad, along with Italian wines (Dr. Foodle prefers prosecco) and an Italian dessert such as Tiramisu. Don’t forget the limoncello!
Throw a Spanish-themed dinner party and serve only tapas (small bites)! Have your guests sit down to a family-style buffet of tapas. Place a large lazy Susan at the center of your table so that guests around the table have easy access to the different food options. Seafood is a must for a Spanish tapas party – try serving steamed clams with melted butter and crusty bread, as well as shrimp or calamari sautéed in olive oil with garlic and red chili flakes. No tapas-style dinner is complete without sangria! Make two batches – one white and one red – to please everyone!
Dinner & A Movie
A dinner party theme can be something as simple as “Dinner and a Movie!” Plan to showcase a new release after a (relatively easy-to-prepare) meal, and create your own mini movie “concession” stand for your guests with popcorn, mini cans of sodas, and a candy bar (buy different candies in bulk and display them in glass jars with scoops.) Re-arrange seating so that it has a movie theater feel, but is still comfortable for your guests. You can even take the party outdoors – give your guests blankets and lawn chairs and project the movie onto a screen or white wall!
Have a traditional New England-style clambake in your backyard! Or, if the weather isn’t cooperating, carry on and have the party in your living room! Invite your guests to wear summer attire and serve steamed lobsters, clams, corn-on-the-cob, potatoes and other summer favorites. Have a raw bar with oysters and different dipping sauces. Serve summer beers and homemade lemonade (spirited or not – it’s up to you!). Decorate with kitschy red checkered linen, paper lanterns, and nautical themed décor.
Challenge yourself to throw a “green” dinner party! Shop at your local farmer’s market and only use items purchased from local vendors! Make a centerpiece of flowers or fruit and vegetables that you find from local farmers. You can look for fun touches, like beeswax candles made by a local artisan. Use mismatched dinnerware from a thrift store as a fun way to showcase the sustainable theme of your party!
